    The Voice of the Crane

    Exactly 70 Years ago today, at 12 Noon on August 15th 1945, a recording of Emperor Hirohito [made the previous day] was broadcast to the Japanese people.

     

     

    This was an imperial command—known as the Voice of the Crane, since the sacred bird could be heard even when it flew unseen.

    For most Japanese, it was the first time they had heard the voice of their Emperor.

    Final and without appeal-

    The Court therefore will order that Japan shall revoke any extant authorization, permit or licence to kill, take or treat whales in relation to JARPA II, and refrain from granting any further permits under Article VIII, paragraph 1, of the Convention, in pursuance of that programme.

    Quite simply the most stunning of results.

    Those that know the work of Roger Payne will be smiling. I hope Roger hears this.

    Songs of the Humpback Whale [National Geographic] was released in the early 1970’s and had a profound impact on how we perceived the world of Cetacea and the implications for all future management.

    I know at least one young boy in 1970 that was forever struck by such findings.

    There are now hundreds of radiation-related feeds from Japan on Pachube, monitoring conditions in realtime and underpinning more than half a dozen incredibly valuable applications built by people around the world. They combine ‘official’ data, ‘unofficial’ official data, and, most importantly to us, realtime networked geiger counter measurements contributed by concerned citizens. Now we’re even seeing some tracking radiation measurements of tap water.

    There is also a new Safecast Global map.  Just stunning.. Have a look here.

    Note: Safecast is a volunteer organisation actively building a radiation sensor network within Japan and globally. Many of the crowd-sourced data points will originate from this effort.
